Sirus Orion Black (b. November 3, 1959), also known as Padfoot, is a pure-blood wizard, the older son of Orion and Walburga Black and the brother of Regulus Black. He is the only member of his pure-blood family to be sorted into Gryffindor. He adamantly opposes their views on Muggle-borns and their support for Voldemort. He was later disowned as a result and spent several summers taking residence with the Potters. Eventually, the money left for Sirius by his late uncle, Alphard Black, allowed him to buy his own flat, though he still took up a summer job at the Leaky Cauldron to support himself.

He started his education at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1970 and was sorted into Gryffindor. He was a chaser for the Gryffindor Quidditch team but was kicked out in sixth year after his prank on Severus Snape.

He befriends James Potter, Peter Pettigrew and Remus Lupin, forming the Marauders. The latter was a werewolf and the reason why Sirius became an Animagus, having the ability to transform into a black dog- earning him the nickname "Padfoot". Throughout the story, he also develops a close friendship with Lily Evans.

Biography[]

Early life (1959-1970)[]

Sirius Black was born on November 3, 1959 in London to Orion and Walburga Black. He has a younger brother, Regulus, whom he has a tumultuous relationship with. Sirius claims that Regulus has never been nice to him since he was a baby. When Regulus entered Hogwarts, he was sorted into Slytherin.

Hogwarts years (1970-1975)[]

First year[]

On the first day of Hogwarts, Sirius met James Potter on the Hogwarts Express, After hearing how great Gryffindor is from James, Sirius asked the Sorting Hat to place him in Gryffindor with James. James and Sirius soon became best mates. His sorting into Gryffindor likely destroyed his relationship with his family.

He shares a dormitory with James Potter, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew and Adam McKinnon.

Second year[]

During an Astronomy class, Sirius and James figured out that Remus was a werewolf. They told Peter to leave Remus a message to meet them in an empty classroom. There, the trio revealed that they knew his secret, but did not fear him, and pledged to do whatever they could to help him through his transformations. It was for this reason that the three other boys became Animagi: James a stag, Peter a rat, and Sirius a dog. As they sneaked back, Professor McGonagall caught them and gave them detention, muttering about them 'marauding'. During the detention, the four boys became close friends, forming the 'Marauders'.

Fifth year[]

In the summer after his fifth year, Sirius' brother, Regulus, told their mother that Daisy, a house elf who was the only creature kind to Sirius in his home, knew that Sirius had snuck out the night before. Their mother then murdered Daisy and mounted the head on the wall. This led to Sirius emptying his vault, as recommended by James, and he ran away to the Potters (whom he had already spent most summers with) soaking, anxious and homeless.

Throughout "The Life and Times"[]

Sixth year[]

"Snaps and the Second Week"[]

"Prongs, mate, I haven't had a detention in... ages, it seems."
— Sirius' troublemaking streak

While at detention, Lily Evans asks Sirius what 'Snaps', a nickname from James Potter, means and to keep it a secret. Afterwards, he tells James.

Sirius starts having tea with his uncle, Professor Alphard Black.

"The Shape of Things to Come"[]

James asks Sirius, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew to help him find the culprit behind the pureblood supremacy posters. The Marauders wait in a classroom on the fourth floor for somebody to appear for hours before finally, at 2am, James spots Roland Urquhart moving on the Marauders Map. James and Sirius follow him while Remus and Peter stay behind to write the note. James and Sirius see Urquhart putting up the posters and when he moves up the stairway, just as he is about to hop over the trick step, James trips him and makes him unconscious. They arrange him to appear as if he walked onto the trick step while Remus and Peter put the note on Lathe's door. They pound the door, waking up Lathe who reads the note and catches Urquhart.

"Conversations"[]

Alphard Black: "Listen, Sirius, there's still hope for your brother, if..."
Sirius Black: "You know. If I'd known that the reason you were being so nice to me all was to form some kind of tear-jerking family reunion, I wouldn't have come at all. And here, I thought it was because, I don't know, I thought maybe you actually wanted to show me that I had a halfway decent relative... who actually cared about me as an individual, not just the heir to the family name."
— Sirius' uncle suggests that he make up with Regulus

His uncle, Alphard Black, asks Sirius to have breakfast together. During breakfast, he commends Sirius for moving in with the Potters and emptying his vault before his mother could take it. They talk about the night Sirius left, and his uncle starts defending Regulus and suggesting that they make up. Frustrated, Sirius storms out.

"Dates with Ravenclaws"[]

Sirius, together with Remus and Peter, join Marlene Price in a booth at the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade, He teases her for being alone while Adam McKinnon is on a date with Kathy Pritchard. He starts playing 'Ten Fingers' to distract Marlene as she waits for her boyfriend, Miles Stimpson. By the time James calls him through their two-way mirror, Sirius is very intoxicated.

"The Art of Walking"[]

Regulus Black: "Sirius, I'm sorry! Sirius, listen to me!"
Sirius Black: "And why the hell should I, Regulus?"
Regulus Black: "Because I'm your brother."
Sirius Black: "That is the second lie you've told me today."
— Regulus tries to apologise to Sirius

A letter from Andromeda Tonks arrives, which advises Sirius to make up with his uncle and implies that he should do the same with Regulus. Later, he visits his uncle's office and Sirius tells him that Andromeda agrees with him on forgiving Regulus. Alphard then tells Sirius that Regulus had cursed a second year Muggle-born, Davey Michaels.

Sirius confronts Regulus and tells him that Marlene Price, Mary Macdonald, Lily and Remus are superior to him by miles and that he should think about that before taunting Muggle-borns and half-bloods. Regulus denies taunting others but Sirius brings up Davey Michael. Regulus insists that Michaels is lying and Sirius tells him that he heard it from their uncle. Regulus apologises and pleads Sirius to hear him out because they are brothers. Sirius storms away, saying that that was the second lie Regulus had told him that day.

"The Connection"[]

Lily Evans: "You lot have Care of Magical Creatures, is that right? Adam McKinnon's in that class—don't ask him about it without me, alright?"
Sirius Black: "Alright."
-
Sirius Black: "So, Adam, I hear you're a vegetarian. Sod off, Prongs. I'm not a saint."
— Sirius makes a promise
LilyandSiriusoutsideLathe'soffice

Sirius: "But that's the beauty of being magic, isn't it? You don't start looking really old until... a hundred and five, maybe one-ten. Of course, I don't intend on living past forty." Lily: "No. You wouldn't, would you?" Lily discovers that Sirius is alright. (by anxiouspineapples)

Sirius and James run into Lily rushing to Lathe's office. She tells them that Adam McKinnon, a victim in the Hogwarts Case, is a vegetarian like Carlotta Meloni, another victim, and they accompany her to his office but find it empty. Sirius runs off to use the map and finds out that Lathe is not in the castle. The trio talk to the third victim, Linda Maxson, and learn that she is not a vegetarian. During class, Sirius and James discover that Adam didn't have any food at the feast, meaning the connection between the victims doesn't exist. Lily hurries away to the library and approaches Sirius in the Common Room that evening. James is on a date so she only tells Sirius her theory. They wait outside Lathe's office to tell Lathe everything.

"Two Steps Forward"[]

Sirius Black: "Maybe we're maturing. Maybe this is that thing they're always calling 'self-restraint'."
James Potter: "Don't be thick. It's only 'self-restraint' if you want to do something and don't. We don't want to. We're not mature... we're just old."
Sirius Black: "That's sad."
James Potter: "Kitchens?"
Sirius Black: "Yes, please."
— Sirius and James start to mature

Sirius and James skip Herbology to help Remus to the Infirmary and decide to flood the Slytherin common room. While checking the Marauders Map, they notice that Snape is also skipping Herbology and decide to pay him a visit. As Sirius gets ready to hex Snape, he hesitates and states that he doesn't want to hex Snape and James agrees. They debate on whether they're becoming old when Snape approaches them. As Sirius and James walk away, Snape hexes Sirius, leaving him unconscious, and casts Levicorpus on James.

During the party to celebrate their Quidditch win, Sirius chats up Alice Griffiths.

"Anatomy of a Red Rose"[]

""Why are you so nice to me?" she asked.
"Oh, that's a common misconception about me—I'm nice to everyone." Alice sent him a pointed look. He tried again, more sincerely, but still drenched with levity: "I like you, Alice Griffiths."
"Like me," she echoed. "Like me how?"
He considered the question. "The usual method, I'd imagine.""
— A solitary Sirius approaches a solitary Alice at the Three Broomsticks

Sirius approaches a lone Alice at the Three Broomsticks and offers to buy her a butterbeer. The queue is extremely long and Sirius offers to show a shortcut so they make their way to the cellar near the private booths. Before they leave, Sirius convinces Alice to eavesdrop on the private booths. They listen in on the teachers and find out that Alphard is dying. He walks away, briskly, leaving behind Alice on a crowded, snowy street.

Sirius confronts Professor Alphard on whether he was ever planning on telling Sirius that he was dying. Alphard replies that he did so because he didn't want Sirius to feel like another person was abandoning him. To which, Sirius replies that he shouldn't trouble himself anymore as he won't have to coddle Sirius and his abandonment issues. Sirius warns him to stay away from him.

Sirius is absent for the rest of the afternoon but in the evening, searches for his friends and finds them at the Hospital Wing. James informs him that someone had used the Cruciatus on Marlene. Sirius then, notices Alice there and asks if she had said anything. Irritated that his friend seemed to care more about how his date felt than about Marlene being under the Cruciatus, James snaps at Sirius to leave if he's going to be self-centred. Sirius retorts "Fine" and then leaves. Alice runs after him and he gently but slightly condescendingly lets her down. However, she tells him that she's not here because she's looking for a relationship but because he found out his uncle is dying and encourages him to tell James.

He enters the Infirmary later, meeting James' eyes and they make up.

"The Harpers"[]

""See, I don't understand that," Sirius burst angrily. "Why wouldn't they tell you? Did they think it'd be better if just—bam, all of a sudden they drop dead?"
Lily watched him carefully, and he briefly met her eye, They exchanged a look that communicated everything: Lily knew that Sirius knew about his uncle, and Sirius knew that Lily... well, that Lily wasn't talking about her dad anymore. "I think," she began, "they didn't want me carrying it around, the fact that he was dying. They wanted to tell me... they wanted to give me enough time to grieve before it happened, but they... they didn't want me to be so burdened... especially when there was nothing I could do about it.""
— Sirius and Lily talk about death

Sirius is approached by Lily who asks about the Harpers. He then, brings up her father's death and Sirius questions her on how weird it must have been to have someone important die. He asks her if she knew it was coming for a long time and bursts angrily when she tells him that she didn't know. They briefly meet each other's eye, communicating that they aren't talking about Lily's dad anymore.

"March"[]

Regulus Black: "You can't get over it, can you? You just can't get over the guilt that you're the product of the same family I am... you have the same blood, same parents, same heritage, same history... you're as much of a pureblood as I am, Sirius. We even look alike. Difference is, I'm not a coward and a blood traitor... oh... and I'm not practically broke, either. I'm not relying on charity."
Sirius Black: "I'm the coward, Regulus? At least I'm not afraid to stand up to my Mummy."
Regulus Black: "You broke her heart."
— Sirius hexes Regulus

Sirius remains very irritable and temperamental due to finding out his uncle is dying. He is running late to meet his friends to reach the Whomping Willow but he still hexes his brother, Regulus.

""Anyways," James continued eventually; "y'know you won' be poverty... er... in poverty. 'Cos I'm rich. An' as for your 'is-o-lation', Mr. Moony... we... are the Mar'ders. An' even though Padfoot's a lairy headcase, an' Wormtail's a soddin' lightweight, an' you get all sen-a-men-al 'bout the moon, Moony, an' I am too good for the lot o' ya—none-uv-us... is a-ever... goin' to be isolated. Now gimme that bottle, mate."
Peter gave him the bottle. They sat in silence, until, some time later, Wormtail began to chuckle.
"What?" asked Remus.
"P-P-Padfoot's eyes," said Peter. "It's still s-s-still purple!"
And for whatever reason, they all laughed at that."
— The Marauders ditch James' birthday party to stay up on the Astronomy Tower together

Sirius gets into a fight at James' birthday party, causing James to pull him out and snap at him that he's given Sirius enough time so he should talk about what's bothering him. Sirius finally tells him and the other Marauders that Professor Black is dying. They spend the rest of the night on the Astronomy Tower together.

"The Quaffle and the Snitch"[]

For Sirius' birthday, the Marauders arrange for the House Elves to serve delectable slices of chocolate cake during supper. Half-way through supper, a dozen house elves enter the hall and act out important events "from Mr. Black's life" including events such as the slaying of a dragon and the invention of magic.

Sirius receives a Nimbus 1500 from Professor Black for his birthday and fifteen minutes later, knocks on his office door to thank him. Sirius apologises for shouting at him and Black says that he should've told Sirius about his condition. The older Black then offers a cup of tea to Sirius and they start chatting about the House Elves' performance that evening.

When Sirius brings him a letter from Andromeda, he tells Sirius how brave it was for them—Andromeda and Sirius—to give up their name and family, something he could never do. He adds that he is resigned to dying and that even about this—he is a coward.

The next day, in the early hours of May 1, 1976, Alphard Black breathes his last and goes peacefully to death. This greatly impacts Sirius as he feels that he lost the 'only family' he had and for many days after, he remains sullen and quick to anger.

"Moments"[]

""There's a knot," said Sirius. His voice was empty and cold now. Brilliant. Perfect. Fitting. "At the base of the tree there's an opening in the roots, and there's a large knot in the wood... impossible to miss."
Snape's black eyes burned with wonder.
"Touch the know on the root, and the tree will freeze. That's how you get through. That's how you see what's inside.""
— Sirius tells Snape how to get into the Whomping Willow

Alphard Black's school service, primarily for the students, is held on May 6 in Hogsmeade but Sirius does not attend. He stays in his dorm and is surprised to find Andromeda Tonks, his favourite cousin who is brought in by the other Marauders, in his dormitory. Sirius tells her that it's not fair which she agrees with. He then tells her that he wishes he hadn't spent time with him this year but Andromeda tells him that he doesn't because while it would hurt less now, he would have missed something he would rather not miss. They talk about a variety of subjects, which always seem to lead back to the Blacks or their uncle. He promises not to forget their uncle and she tells him not to forget his friends either.

"I know you think you've lost your only family. But you haven't. No matter what, we are your brothers. No matter what."
— James comforts Sirius that he will always have his brothers

None of his other dormmates have entered the dormitory as they decide to give Sirius space. Sirius only makes an entrance to the Common Room in the evening where he apologises to his friends for being a prick. When the Marauders return from the Kitchens to fetch Sirius supper, James hangs back and tells Sirius that he will always have them.

During the next Hogsmeade visit, the Marauders run into Snape talking to Regulus. Sirius draws his wand and looks ready to kill Snape for poisoning his brother but his friends convince him that they can get back on him another time.

A few days later, on a day with the full moon (a day Remus transforms into a werewolf), Sirius runs into Snape and calls out his name. Snape sneers at him and mockingly asks if Lupin will be able to spare him. Sirius calmly replies that he doesn't care and Snape continues. A plan forms in Sirius' mind to give Snape exactly what he'd always wanted. He tells Snape that they'll be going out and that he can too, if he'd like. Snape doubtfully asks him why he should believe him and Sirius replies that everybody knows that he's wanted to find out where they go and how to get there since day one. He tells Snape that if he touches the knot on the root, the tree will freeze so he can see what's inside.

"Life is But a Dream"[]

James Potter: "And the worst part. The worst part is I actually thought you were different... different from Snape, from the Slytherins, from your fucked up family. I thought—thought you were one of us. But I was wrong, wasn't I? You're not different. You're exactly like them."
Sirius Black: "Shut up. You don't get to say that, James. Don't pretend that you would care one bit about Snape if it wasn't for her. And just because you're worried about what she thinks, you don't get to..."
"A simple movement, really; the simple fluid movement of his arm, cocking back and propelling forward with a fuel of adrenaline, till his tightly fisted hand came into contact with Sirius's face."
— Sirius and James talk after the Whomping Willow incident

After telling Snape about the Whomping Willow, he strolls into the dormitory late. James and Peter yell at him because they'll miss Remus' transformation but Sirius just grins. Sirius says he figured out his revenge on Snape and had told him how to get into the Whomping Willow. James questions if this is a joke and Peter looks at him in horror. James runs out to the tree.

Sirius reaches the Whomping Willow grounds to find James and Lily with an unconscious Snape. James orders Lily to leave. Sirius begins speaking when they're alone but James moves away and tells him to stay the fuck away from him. Sirius is too stunned to speak for a while but when he begins talking again, James interrupts him and asks him what the fuck he was thinking. Sirius starts to say that he doesn't know and James bitterly tells him that the worst part was that he thought Sirius was different from his family but he's not. Sirius orders him to shut up because he wouldn't have cared about Snape if it wasn't for Lily. James punches him and repeats to Sirius to stay the fuck away while he makes his way back to Hogwarts with Snape.

"Out"[]

Sirius Black: "So that's it? Just like that? I'm out."
James Potter: "Yes. You're out."
Sirius Black: "After everything?"
Remus Lupin: "There was never anything. There were never any 'Marauders.' We were never brothers or mates or whatever we thought we were. It was all a lie, because it was only a game to you, Sirius."
James Potter: "It was all a lie."
Sirius Black: "It wasn't."
— Sirius is kicked out from the group

Dumbledore decides not to expel Sirius but he loses a lot of points for Gryffindor, is kicked off the Gryffindor Quidditch team and receives many detentions as punishment. He is also put on probation.

When Remus returns to the dormitory from the hospital wing, Sirius starts talking by using their nickname for Remus, "Moony", and Remus snaps at him not to call him that. Sirius begins pleading that he is sorry and tries to explain himself. Remus turns on him, shouting at Sirius about what he thinks he can say that would change how Remus feels. James then walks in and questions if this is Sirius' dormitory. Sirius asks if this is it and if he's just out. James tells Sirius that Sirius is out and agrees with Remus that the 'Marauders' were all a lie. As Sirius leaves, Peter enters and tells James and Sirius that Dumbledore has called for them.

"Mrs. Potter looked sadly at him, resting one comforting hand on his shoulder. "You're a good person, Sirius Black."
And it broke his heart that he knew she was wrong."
— Grace Potter tries to comfort Sirius

James and Sirius walk in to find Grace Potter in the Headmaster's Office. She attempts to reassure Sirius that he is always welcome at the Potters while defending him to an agitated James. James says through gritted teeth that while he can't tell Sirius if he's allowed to stay in his family's home, he can say that Sirius is not his family and then walks out.

Sirius Black: "And if I hadn't gone into the compartment where James was, I would have put on the Sorting Hat and asked to be in Slytherin instead of Gryffindor, and I would be—I'd be just like them, torturing muggleborns and calling you 'mudblood' and feeling superior because I'm... Sirius fucking Black. Turns out, not even James's enthusiasm can circumvent destiny. I may wear the gold and red tie but I'm just like them."
Lily Evans: "You're not. You're not like them."
— Sirius on the pure chance that he's in the Gryffindor Common Room

Late at night, Lily approaches Sirius, lying down on a couch in the Common Room, and asks if he's sleeping. He tells her that he was voted out of his dormitory, and apologises to Lily. She tells him that she knows he didn't mean any of it and Sirius laughs at her, asking how she knows if he doesn't even know. He explains that while it's not an excuse, his uncle had died, Snape was with Regulus and with Snape being after Remus for years, it had felt like any other prank. Sirius comments that she might be the only person who doesn't hate him after she forgives him. Lily reassures him that his friends will come over because they want to forgive him. Sirius starts talking about he's in Gryffindor by pure chance because he met James on the train, and not torturing Muggle-borns and calling her 'Mudblood' but in the end, he's just like them. She assures him that while he made a mistake, there's nothing intrinsically wrong with him and that he has a second chance now.

After Lily leaves, Sirius opens a Ministry letter. It states that Sirius has received most of Alphard Black's funds as per his will. Attached to the letter, is a copy of the will which reads "With love and best wishes to my brave and worthy nephew."

"To End a Year"[]

""I should be going," said Sirius, getting to his feet. "See you tomorrow, everyone."
The other sixth years—with the exception of James and Remus, who determinedly looked away—bid Sirius goodnight, and, with an unreturned glance at his two former friends, he slouched out through the portrait hole."
— Remus and James are still stiff around Sirius

The sixth-year Gryffindors have been playing Gobstones for an hour when Sirius, the only sixth-year not playing, enters the Common Room. Lily calls out to him and invites him to play. Initially, Sirius makes for his dorm but is eventually convinced to join by the girls. When Sirius leaves, all of the sixth-years aside from Remus and James bid him goodnight. He casts a glance at his two former friends but they do not return the gesture.

Summer of 1976[]

"Contra Mundum"[]

""And you forgive me?" pressed Sirius, shocked. "All of that, you forgive?"
Remus nodded again.
And he ought to have just shut up and accepted it, but, of course, Sirius didn't. "Are you sure?"
"Yeah. Pretty sure."
A hundred emotions were etched across Sirius's face. There was gratitude and fear and anger and hurt and confusion. And then, there was regret: "I'm so sorry," he whispered, but the both heard.
"I know," said Remus sincerely."
— Remus forgives Sirius

Sirius purchases an apartment above the Apothecary in Diagon Alley and gets a summer job at the Leaky Cauldron. During one of his shifts, his cousin, Narcissa Black, walks in and is surprised to see Sirius working there. However, she quickly looks away and moves towards the door to Diagon Alley without a word until Sirius speaks up. She tells him that Uncle Alphard was blasted off the family tree, just like him, for leaving Sirius most of his gold. Sirius reminds her that Andromeda had also been blasted off the family tree, causing Narcissa to flinch. Sirius interrupts to add that it's not too late for her. She steps forward to say something before freezing and telling Sirius that it's too late for him. She then hurries away.

A few days later, Remus knocks on Sirius' door with Peter and enters his flat to tell Sirius that there aren't many people who know of his condition and furthermore, people who would be willing to help Remus. Thus, he wants to forgive Sirius. Sirius is shocked by this announcement but after some pressing, he apologises once more and thanks Remus. The three of them, then, share a drink together.

"The Week of the Demands"[]

""I won't say I'm sorry," James interrupted. "I'm not even sure that this isn't a huge mistake, but—all the same..." He swallowed. "You're my best mate. And... I reckon that's enough."
Sirius just stared.
"W—what?"
"Are you going to make me repeat it?"
"I'm considering it..."
"It's enough. I said it's enough.""
— James forgives Sirius

Over a week, the Dark Lord sends out demands and carries out killings. On Thursday, Sirius walks into the Leaky Cauldron. Donna informs him that James is at the pub and that he should stay out of his way as tensions are running high. Sirius soon leaves but turns around when he hears his name to find James calling out to him. Sirius is shocked and waits for James to speak. James tells Sirius that he will never forgive him, and only when Sirius realises he's disappointed does he notice that he had been hopeful for forgiveness. James continues to dig at Sirius, wanting a fight, but Sirius only tells James to fuck off. When James taunts Sirius with Regulus, Sirius does the same with Snape. James then shoves Sirius, starting a fight.

A few minutes later, Lily and Marlene break up the fight. Lily then catches up to Sirius and tends to his injuries. Sirius tells Lily that James had, in other words, told him that he hated him as they had both crossed lines with things they can't say. Lily tries to comfort him by saying that James will come around but Sirius disagrees.

"Then—"Listen, James," Sirius began, "the truth is that there's only one reason, and you know it." (He did.) "Because I'm sorry."
James had been hoping against hope that Sirius would have something else to say, but he realized now that he had also known all along that it was impossible.
"That's not enough," he murmured. "I'm sorry. It's just—I just can't."
Sirius's face was pale; all the anger had faded. He merely looked sad, and he nodded. James pushed himself to his feet, and then held out his hand, pulling Sirius up as well. They stared at each other for a moment."
— James still cannot forgive Sirius

The next day, Sirius steps out for his break and is surprised to find James standing behind the Leaky Cauldron. James tells him that he wants things to return to the way they were but he needs a reason. Sirius replies bitterly that James only wants him to beg although he knows Sirius is sorry and would take it back if he could. It breaks into a fight and after a few minutes, they have their wands pointing at each other. James repeats to Sirius that he needs more, a reason, to forgive Sirius. Sirius repeats that the only reason why James should forgive him, which James already knows, is because he is sorry. James tells him that it's not enough, and they apologise for hitting each other before James leaves.

A few days later, Sirius goes into work to find James seated at the bar. There, James tells Sirius that he won't apologise, but Sirius is his best mate which James reckons is enough. Sirius only stares at James before asking if James is forgiving him. James tells him, "yes." There's a slight pause before they start chatting like friends again.

"The Wedding"[]

Sirius questions James about why he hasn't answered the two-way mirror, and learns that James had broken his out of anger. The Marauders decide to get the mirror fixed and go on a wild goose chase around the Ministry of Magic, Hogsmeade and Harvest Lane, ending up at The Daily Prophet's offices. There, they manage to find Clarence Byron and ask him to help them repair the mirror. However, they learn that Byron is a squib who tells them that the best person to ask for help would be Pierson Peasegood.

They run into a dead end while searching for Pierson but as they sit in a shop, James makes the connection that Pierson Peasegood is Pip, the elderly man who is always drinking and sharing stories at the Leaky Cauldron. The Marauders rush over there where Pip fixes the mirror.

"Phoenix"[]

""Come along, Cygnus," said the dark wizard, who had not broken eye contact with Sirius. "We wouldn't want to get dirt on our robes."
"Yes, go along, Uncle Cygnus," muttered Sirius spitefully. "Someone might see him consorting with his son."
"You are not my son," spat the wizard."
— Orion and Sirius' poor relationship

Remus and Sirius confront James for not telling Lily that he is Head Boy and dating Carlotta as they go to get Peter for the protest. James becomes irritated and tells them that he has no obligations to Lily. The duo argue that they have a history especially since they had nearly kissed and James had brought Lily to the protest that day, demonstrating that she is warming up to him. They say that they have spent the past six years listening to James rant and come up with ideas to impress Lily when James asks them why they care. James assures them that he is over Lily as he grows more irate.

During the protest, Sirius' father, Orion Black, and uncle, Cygnus Black, shout that "mudbloods and blood traitors will get what they deserve." After giving James his wand, Sirius steps forward from the crowd to retort against his father. Orion moves closer to gently ask if his eye has healed. Sirius tells him to leave and Orion calls out to Cygnus to leave. When Sirius mutters spitefully about his father not wanting to be seen with his son, Orion replies that Sirius is not his son.

"Old, New, Ballroom, and Blue"[]

""Yeah. And Prongs might still know a bit of Greek... that was the language his mum wanted him to learn. Blacks always learn French, though. Ballroom dancing, also—for some reason, we all learn ballroom dancing. And Quidditch, and Goblins' Gallop, which is a card game you've never heard of, and the family tree... we memorize our family trees..." Sirius trailed off. For a moment, Lily thought he might have forgotten she was there at all, but then he recollected himself. "There are a lot of traditions that the old families uphold... the very old ones, that is. Potters, Blacks, Malfoys, Sellwyns... and they're part of us. Whether it's ballroom dancing or thinking muggleborns are mudbloods— it's all the same... it's why all of this is happening to your lot..."
"Sirius..."
"It doesn't go away, either," he interrupted. "I can still dance quite well, you know.""
— Sirius shares about growing up in an old pure-blood family and the instilled ideas to Lily

Sirius and about thirty other protesters volunteer to go to the cells in the Auror department. Lily, who is seated next to him, remarks that Egbert Dearborn didn't behave the way she'd expected pure-bloods to. Sirius discusses how his upbringing in a pure-blood family still affects him in some ways and how he feels guilty over what "his people" have been doing to Muggle-borns.

Seventh year[]

"Carlotta Delenda Est"[]

Sirius slips down the stairs while making his way to the Great Hall with Peter. Mulciber then emerges with his wand drawn at his side. taunting Sirius that it seems like his boyfriends have taken him off their probation so at least, he won't be alone when he gets kicked out. Sirius only retorts back at him, causing Mulciber to drawl about why there is no famous Marauder retaliation.

At counselling with Madam Keepdown, Sirius is with the rest of the Marauders when James and Carlotta sit next to them. He leaves to sit down next to Lily after calling Carlotta a 'Quaffle', confusing Carlotta. When he talks to Lily, he calls her a 'Snitch', confusing her as well. The class is assigned to pair up with someone they don't know well, and Sirius attempts to pair up with Lily but she tells him that Madam Keepdown caught them talking. He makes a face and goes off to find Alexa Kyle, whom he arranges a date with for the next day.

That evening, after the whole fiasco in class with Carlotta and Shelley, Sirius meets up with the Marauders to set a date to plan the Full Moon Night. Sirius asks James if he regrets the Quaffle decision and James says he doesn't with Remus backing him up that it wasn't Carlotta's fault. The others make fun of James for being Head Boy.

Sirius is leaving the lavatory alone when Mulciber enters. Sirius begins that he appreciates Mulciber and his little friends trying to taunt him into landing himself in trouble but now, Mulciber and he are alone so Sirius could smash his skull without anyone knowing. Mulciber steps aside after murmuring that he'll say hello to Bellatrix and Regulus when he sees them. The Marauders ask Sirius how he is when he arrives, and he simply replies that he is alright. The others exchange glances but make no further comment.

James is occupied as the Quidditch captain on Friday afternoon, and Remus drags Peter to the library, leaving Sirius bored at the library. Remus requests Sirius to get him a book, and as he scans the shelves, Sirius encounters the Slytherins, including Mulciber. Sirius then hands the book over and asks to leave before storming out by himself.

Mulciber calls out if Sirius' boyfriend is off with his girl which must really hurt while Sirius is walking down the corridor. Sirius merely asks if that's his best. and Mulciber starts a repertoire about Regulus but, as he mentions Sirius' uncle, his tone changes with an earnestness in the insults now. When Sirius stops walking, Mulciber keeps taunting about what Sirius thinks will happen to his blood-traitor friends. Sirius realises that Mulciber is the maddest of the Slytherins because he means what he says. Mulciber is thrown back by a jet of blue light as Sirius begins to grab his wand. Remus walks up to Sirius and tells him that he doesn't have to explain about the Slytherins and to let him know if they cause any issue.

Lily is alone in her room when she hears Sirius, Remus and Peter knock on her door. All of them sit around her room and after an hour, Remus asks Lily if she likes James. Lily tells the boys softly not to tell him and after a long silence, she says she'll get over it because he did.

"Life in the Shelley Boat"[]

Sirius finds Clancy Goshawk outside Gryffindor Tower, and asks her what she's doing here. She replies that she wants to return a book to Remus and Sirius agrees to give it to him. Clancy hesitates, going on that it would be better to give the book herself as some people can be very particular and so on. Sirius goes to fetch Remus, who acts very hurriedly to leave the Common Room after learning that Clancy is waiting outside. Sirius proceeds to ask Marlene who Clancy is as he thinks Remus fancies her. Marlene calls it 'cute' as Clancy is dating Charlie Plex, who she doesn't consider as a moral actor. They decide to call their operation to encourage Remus and Clancy to date, Operation Mancy (Moony + Clancy).

Physical Description[]

Sirius is often described as handsome. He has black hair and grey-blue eyes. He shares some traits such as his eye colour, nose and some mannerisms with his uncle, Alphard Black.

Personality and traits[]

Relationships[]

Alphard Black[]

Sirius considers Alphard as his only family aside from Andromeda (who is now a Tonks with her own family). Despite being a part of the family, Alphard disagreed with the family's beliefs like Sirius. When Sirius was maltreated as a child, Alphard was the only one who was there for him. They grew closer in the year that Alphard worked as the Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor at Hogwarts, often having tea together. Sirius was heavily affected by Alphard's passing towards the end of his sixth year.

Black Family[]

"Sirius felt a twinge of jealousy. At first, he supposed it was because Ted and Dora would have Andromeda, but then he thought it might be that he was jealous of Andromeda, because she would have Ted and Dora. There was a part of both Andromeda and Sirius that would always be Black, but her part was smaller. She had a husband; she could take a new name and become part of a new family. Sirius would take his name with him forever."
— Sirius and his 'Black' name

As a child, Sirius received affection from his mother, Regulus, Narcissa, Bellatrix and Andromeda, and occasionally his father. While he was neglected to a certain extent as a child, he was only maltreated after being sorted into Gryffindor when he was eleven. He eventually ran away and was disowned by his family. Afterwards, his surname 'Black' only served to remind Sirius of the family that had rejected him.

Potter Family[]

"(..) but Sirius is family."
— Grace Potter defending Sirius

Throughout his years at Hogwarts, Sirius spent most of the holidays and summer with the Potters due to his close friendship with James Potter. When Sirius ran away from home, he naturally stayed with the Potters, who considered him family.

Andromeda Tonks (née Black)[]

Andromeda is Sirius' favourite cousin. Her marriage to a Muggle-born caused her to be disowned by the Black family, and since then, Sirius frequently visited her home over the summer holidays.

Alice Longbottom (née Griffiths)[]

Sirius had a brief fling with Alice Longbottom, however, they do not go further than flirting.

Canon Divergence[]

In the Harry Potter series, Sirius Black's birthday is November 3, 1959, not April 7, 1960.
